Diversity, structure and spatial distribution of megabenthic communities in Cap de Creus continental shelf and submarine canyon (NW Mediterranean)

چکیده
The continental shelf and submarine canyon off Cap de Creus (NW Mediterranean) were declared a Site of Community Importance (SCI) within the Natura 2000 Network in 2014. Implementing an effective management plan to preserve its biological diversity monitor evolution through time requires detailed characterization benthic ecosystem. Based on 60 underwater video transects performed between 2007 2013 (before declaration SCI), we thoroughly describe composition structure main megabenthic communities dwelling from down 400 m depth inside canyon. We then mapped spatial distribution using Random Forest algorithm, which incorporated geomorphological oceanographic layers as predictors, well intensity bottom-trawling fishing fleet. Although study area has historically been exposed commercial practices, it still holds rich ecosystem with over 165 different invertebrate (morpho)species megafauna identified footage, form up 9 distinct communities. is home coral gardens sea fan Eunicella cavolini, pen soft assemblages, dense beds crinoid Leptometra phalangium, diverse sponge grounds massive aggregations brittle star Ophiothrix fragilis. characterized by cold-water community dominated scleractinian Madrepora oculata, found association several species including oysters, brachiopods variety species, cerianthids urchins, mostly sedimentary areas. compared habitats/biocenoses described reference habitat classification systems that consider circalittoral bathyal environments Mediterranean. complex environmental setting characteristic marine likely produces optimal conditions for suspension- filter-feeding develop. uniqueness this anthropogenic pressures faces should prompt development actions ensure long-term conservation fauna representative area.

Operational analysis of NW Mediterranean shelf
In this paper, we present the results from a high horizontal resolution numerical simulation of the northwestern Mediterranean using a z-level, non-hydrostatic, primitive equation ocean model (DieCAST). The high resolution allows an accurate representation of the submarine canyons that presides in the region. The model is one-way 5 coupled to a large scale model of the Mediterrenean Sea through...

in current study, 63 samples of bat populations collected from differ regions were used for evaluating the geographic variations. twenty cranial and dental characters for traditional morphometric and landmarks method on the ventral, dorsal skull and mandible for geometry morphometric studies were used. statistical analyses of traditional morphometric and geometry morphometric data indicated low...
Diversity and Distribution Patterns of Cetaceans in the Subtropical Southwestern Atlantic Outer Continental Shelf and Slope
Temporal and spatial patterns of cetacean diversity and distribution were investigated through eight ship-based surveys carried out during spring and autumn between 2009 and 2014 on the outer continental shelf (~150m) and slope (1500m) off southeastern and southern Brazil (~23°S to ~34°S). The survey area was divided into southeast and south areas according to their oceanographic characteristic...

Metazooplankton diversity, community structure and spatial distribution
Biogeosciences Discussions This discussion paper is/has been under review for the journal Biogeosciences (BG). Please refer to the corresponding final paper in BG if available. Abstract The diversity and distribution of metazooplankton across the Mediterranean Sea was studied along a 3000 km long transect from the eastern to the western basins during the BOUM cruise in summer 2008. Metazooplank...
